The Torbay Bookshop, Torbay Road, Paignton is an independent bookshop that is so much more. The owners Matthew and Sarah Clarke support and encourage local writers, and several members of Brixham Writers have celebrated their book launches in this haven for readers and writers.
Last November, The Torbay Bookshop celebrated 20 years of business in Paignton. Through this period many famous people have passed through the doors with queues of excited customers waiting to meet their favourite authors, whether it was Sir Norman Wisdom or Francesco Da Mosto or Michael Morpurgo or Jacqueline Wilson. Events created by the shop have included the Crime Writers Festival: ‘Sleuths’, theatre talks with Alan Titchmarsh, Christopher Biggins, Judith Miller and Paul Atterbury from The Antiques Roadshow plus a hugely successful signing session with Brian May and the late Sir Patrick Moore at The Palace Theatre.
The Torbay Bookshop has won numerous awards including ‘Independent Bookseller of the Year’. Last year it became The Visitor Information Point for Paignton offering both residents and visitors the opportunity to pick up leaflets, discount vouchers, book accommodation and purchase car parking passes and theatre tickets.
Just two years ago the shop’s owners, Matthew and Sarah Clarke, purchased the franchise for Thorntons and last year were thrilled to receive recognition at Thornton’s national franchisee conference by winning three awards including ‘Franchise of the Year 2012/2013’.
The continued diversification within the shop has enabled customers to use the store as a ‘one stop shop’.
The fantastic range of gift books and children’s books are often enhanced by special signed editions which constantly change. Those on the shop’s Facebook and Twitter pages are the lucky ones to get immediate information when they arrive. The legendary ‘next day service’ and out of print book ordering service has enabled The Torbay Bookshop to remain a successful part of Paignton’s retail mix.
Just recently the shop has had a refit which includes a new card area displaying some gorgeous greeting cards and new displays for books making it easier to choose from the numerous titles stocked. Their exclusive range of greetings cards, gift stationery, DVDs and CDs, calendars and diaries complimenting the fabulous Thorntons selection make The Torbay Bookshop well worth a visit.
Happy 20th Birthday The Torbay Bookshop!
