I didn’t set out to be a writer. It sort of grabbed me by the throat when I discovered the story of my grandmother – she was a White Russian refugee who fled from the Bolsheviks across Siberia and down into China. What a breathtaking tale that is! It inspired my first book THE RUSSIAN CONCUBINE. From then on, I was hooked.
I write big historical novels set in exotic places – Russia, China, Malaya, Egypt – with stories that take place in the first half of the twentieth century. I love researching troubled times in far-away places and bringing that time and place to life through the sharp focus of the eyes of my characters.
Before taking to writing novels in Devon, I worked in advertising in London, where I met my husband.
My books, published by Sphere/LittleBrown, have been translated into more than twenty languages and have been on the New York Times bestseller list.
